Spent another glorious night out in the peaceful desert; sleeping in the truck. I want to say I was up with the sun but, if I’m being honest, I think I gave the sun a hour or two head start. Even then I would have been OK with staying put except I was being driven by the need to return yesterday’s Gatorade to nature as is right and proper.
Since I was wearing no shoes at the time, I thought it would be advisable to step out onto the running board to accomplish my mission. I opened the door fully so as to effectively block all morning breezes and felt safe in choosing a target at about 10 o’clock from my position. As I leaned back to extend the trajectory I initiated a graceful arc toward a spot roughly 3 feet out.
At that moment, a gecko darted out from under my truck to investigate the splash! Apparently it over-ran it’s intended vantage point and was hit squarely in the back of the head. The sudden impact forced the poor thing to the ground. It rolled over twice, did an immediate about-face and scampered back toward the relative safety of the truck. Reaching the half-way point, it once again turned back to witness the proceedings. Shortly however, it lost interest and made it’s way back to the shade.
Of course, I found this all to be hilarious until I realized that I can’t be sure where that gecko actually came from. I might find my car insurance cancelled in a day or two. You never know who you’ll meet in the desert.
